Rewind Therapy at Unmasked

A gentle way to process trauma, without reliving it

UNDERSTANDING TRAUMA

At Unmasked, we understand that trauma doesn’t always look how people expect.

It isn’t just what we see in the news.

It can be quieter, longer-term, and often misunderstood.

Trauma can come from what happened, but also from what was missing, the safety, support, or understanding that wasn’t there at the time.

WHAT TRAUMA CAN LOOK LIKE

You might recognise this in yourself:

• Feeling constantly on edge or overwhelmed
• Emotional shutdown or numbness
• Anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or fear that doesn’t make sense
• Difficulty trusting yourself or others
• Feeling stuck, even when life looks “fine”

Trauma can also come from:

• Childhood experiences and unmet needs
• Education systems where you felt unsupported or misunderstood
• Past relationships
• Supporting loved ones with PTSD or psychosis
• Carrying second-hand or relational trauma

These experiences can stay in your body and nervous system long after they’ve ended.

What is

Rewind Therapy?

What is Rewind Therapy?

What Makes This Different

What is Rewind Therapy?

Rewind is a structured trauma-processing technique that helps reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories, without needing to talk through them in detail.

Closure without exposure.

This means:

• No need to relive or retell everything

• No forced exposure

• A more contained, structured approach

How Rewind Works

What Makes This Different

What is Rewind Therapy?

Using guided visualisation, Rewind helps your brain reprocess how a memory is stored.

You remain in control at all times, working with the memory in a distanced and manageable way.

Many people notice:
• Reduced emotional intensity

• Fewer intrusive memories

• A greater sense of distance from what happened

What Makes This Different

 • You are not pushed to disclose everything

• You are not expected to relive your trauma

• Sessions are structured, safe, and paced around you

Dr. David Muss explains his approach...

Case Study: Rewind Technique in Practice

From Hypervigilance to Freedom                                                                                             Longstanding phobia response  (Bees and wasps), linked to cumulative distressing experiences

Intervention: The Rewind Technique

Sarah accessed the Rewind Technique as a client.

The Rewind Technique is a non-disclosure, trauma-focused intervention, meaning clients do not need to verbally describe their trauma in detail.

It works by guiding the client through a safe, controlled visualisation process, allowing traumatic memories to be processed without triggering overwhelming emotional responses.

Key features include:

  • Deep relaxation and creation of a “safe space”

  • Viewing distressing memories in a dissociated way (e.g. like a film)

  • Rewinding the memory to reduce emotional intensity

  • Supporting the brain to reprocess and “re-store” the memory

This approach is designed to reduce involuntary fear responses such as panic, flashbacks, and hyperarousal.

Experience of the Session

The intervention was experienced as calm and non-intrusive.

  • No detailed verbal disclosure was required

  • No emotional overwhelm occurred

  • No immediate dramatic shift was reported

This aligns with how Rewind often works, subtly rather than through cathartic release.

Outcomes

Changes emerged gradually over the following 1–2 weeks:

  • Significant reduction in hypervigilance

  • Absence of automatic panic responses to triggers

  • Increased ability to engage in previously avoided environments

  • Improved sense of safety within the body

  • Reduced anticipatory anxiety

Sarah described the shift as:

“A quiet settling… like my nervous system had finally calmed down.”

By two weeks post-intervention, the phobia response no longer dictated behaviour.
