If you're based in England and covered under the NHS, you now have the legal right to choose your mental healthcare provider and your preferred mental healthcare team.
This significant right extends to individuals seeking support for conditions such as ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). For example, if you find the waiting time for your ADHD or ASD assessment too long, you have the option to explore alternative providers.
The Right to Choose within mental health is a relatively recent option, introduced since 2018. As a result, not all patients, GPs, or other clinicians may be aware of it or how it functions. For those undergoing the ADHD or ASD assessment process, we've provided an explanation below to clarify how the Right to Choose applies.
