At Unmasked, we understand that trauma doesn’t always look how people expect.
It isn’t just what we see in the news.
It can be quieter, longer-term, and often misunderstood.
Trauma can come from what happened, but also from what was missing, the safety, support, or understanding that wasn’t there at the time.
What Trauma Can Look Like
You might recognise this in yourself:
• Feeling constantly on edge or overwhelmed
• Emotional shutdown or numbness
• Anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or fear that doesn’t make sense
• Difficulty trusting yourself or others
• Feeling stuck, even when life looks “fine”
Trauma can also come from:
• Childhood experiences and unmet needs
• Education systems where you felt unsupported or misunderstood
• Past relationships
• Supporting loved ones with PTSD or psychosis
• Carrying second-hand or relational trauma
These experiences can stay in your body and nervous system long after they’ve ended.
Trauma therapy offers a space to:
• Understand your responses without judgement
• Reduce overwhelm and emotional intensity
• Build safety within your body and mind
• Process experiences at your own pace
• Begin to feel more in control again
Our approach is:
• Trauma-informed
• Neurodivergent-affirming
• Gentle, relational, and paced around you
We may incorporate:
• Inner child work
• Guided visualisation
• Psychoeducation
• Nervous system regulation
There is no pressure to go faster than you’re ready for.

Rewind is a structured trauma-processing technique that helps reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories, without needing to talk through them in detail.
This means:
• No need to relive or retell everything
• No forced exposure
• A more contained, structured approach
Using guided visualisation, Rewind helps your brain reprocess how a memory is stored.
You remain in control at all times, working with the memory in a distanced and manageable way.
Many people notice:
• Reduced emotional intensity
• Fewer intrusive memories
• A greater sense of distance from what happened
• You are not pushed to disclose everything
• You are not expected to relive your trauma
• Sessions are structured, safe, and paced around you

From Hypervigilance to Freedom Longstanding phobia response (Bees and wasps), linked to cumulative distressing experiences
This case study is based on the lived experience of Sarah McKimm, who experienced a persistent and intense phobic response to bees and wasps from childhood into adulthood.
Unlike single-incident trauma, this response developed through multiple distressing experiences over time, including:
Over time, these experiences contributed to a conditioned fear response, where the nervous system reacted automatically to perceived threat.
The phobia significantly affected Sarah’s daily life:
The experience was described as:
“Always waiting for something to happen."
Sarah accessed the Rewind Technique as a client.
The Rewind Technique is a non-disclosure, trauma-focused intervention, meaning clients do not need to verbally describe their trauma in detail.
It works by guiding the client through a safe, controlled visualisation process, allowing traumatic memories to be processed without triggering overwhelming emotional responses.
Key features include:
This approach is designed to reduce involuntary fear responses such as panic, flashbacks, and hyperarousal.
The intervention was experienced as calm and non-intrusive.
This aligns with how Rewind often works, subtly rather than through cathartic release.
Changes emerged gradually over the following 1–2 weeks:
Sarah described the shift as:
“A quiet settling… like my nervous system had finally calmed down.”
By two weeks post-intervention, the phobia response no longer dictated behaviour.

Toni is a neurodivergent counsellor, coach, and co-founder of Unmasked, offering a relational, trauma-informed approach that supports clients to make sense of their experiences and rebuild their lives in a way that truly fits.
She works with clients who have experienced trauma in many forms, including PTSD, childhood trauma, educational trauma, and the long-term impact of undiagnosed neurodivergence.
Toni also supports individuals affected by relational and second-hand trauma, including those who have supported loved ones experiencing PTSD or psychosis, and the lasting fear and impact this can create.
Toni recognises that trauma does not always look like the stories we see in the media. It can come from what happened, but also from what was missing, the safety, understanding, or support that wasn’t there at the time.
Understanding that trauma can feel overwhelming to approach, Toni focuses on helping you feel safe, supported, and in control from the very beginning. She meets you where you are, working gently and at your pace, without judgement or pressure to share more than you feel ready to.
Her approach is neurodivergent-affirming and trauma-informed, with a focus on helping you understand your responses, reduce overwhelm, and feel more regulated, safe, and in control.
Toni’s work may include inner child work, guided visualisation, Rewind-informed techniques, and psychoeducation, always adapted to suit you as an individual.
Alongside her professional work, Toni brings lived experience of neurodivergence and late diagnosis, shaping her understanding of how trauma, identity, and burnout can become deeply interconnected.
Her aim is to support you in not only processing what has happened, but in building a life that feels more aligned, more manageable, and more your own.

Sarah is a neurodivergent, trained counsellor and co-founder of Unmasked, offering a calm, compassionate, and grounded approach to therapy.
She works with clients who have experienced trauma in many forms, including adverse childhood experiences, both what happened and what was missing, grief, and the impact of undiagnosed neurodivergence. Sarah also brings extensive experience supporting individuals affected by serious violence, including those impacted by murder and manslaughter through her work with victim support.
Understanding that starting trauma work can feel daunting, Sarah focuses on helping you feel safe, supported, and in control from the very beginning. She meets you exactly where you are, working gently and at your pace, without judgement or pressure to share more than you feel ready to.
Her approach is trauma-informed and centred on nervous system regulation, practical coping strategies, and psychoeducation, helping you to better understand your responses and feel more regulated, safe, and in control.
Sarah’s work is particularly centred around Rewind-informed techniques. Through the use of powerful guided visualisation, this approach can help reduce the emotional intensity of distressing memories in a way that feels contained and manageable, allowing clients to process trauma and move forward with greater freedom from its pain.
She may also draw on other supportive approaches where helpful, always adapting the work to suit you as an individual.
Alongside her professional experience, Sarah has also experienced the impact of the rewind technique personally. This has enabled her to become significantly less reactive to bees and wasps, reinforcing her belief in the effectiveness of this approach in creating meaningful and lasting change.
